Arthur C. Nagel
88, of Girard, passed away Thursday evening, June 16, 2011 at Carlinville Area Hospital.
Art was born March 21, 1923 in Girard, the son of Frederick E. and Bertha (Luedtke) Nagel. He married Elizabeth (Adams) Nagel in the Methodist Church Parsonage in Girard on December 24, 1949.
Art was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard. Art graduated from Girard High School, class of 1941 and was in the U.S. Marines during WWII. Art served in the South Pacific, Marshall Islands, Samoa and Okinawa. He played the trombone in the Marine Band, High School and Community Bands. Art worked for Allis Chalmers, Hummer Manufacturing and Hobbs Manufacturing in Springfield for several years. In 1956 he began his career with Kroger Grocery Store in Virden until his retirement in 1986. Art was one of the first greeters at Wal-Mart in Springfield after retirement. He is a member of Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church in Virden, Elmer E. Vance American Legion Post #386 in Virden, the Sunnyside Association, as well as, past board member of Trinity Lutheran and Prairie Temple Church. Art served his community in past years as an alderman and little league coach.
Art is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of Girard; daughter, Kathie Ellis (James) of Virden; two sons, Marty Nagel (Barb) of Springfield, IL, and John Nagel (Patricia) of Girard; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brother, Ernest Nagel (Stella) of Bethalto; sister, Vera Rohleder (Jack) of Toulon, IL, and several nieces and nephews.
Art was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred and Walt Nagel and sister, Florence Goetze. Funeral Information
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday, June 20 at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Prairie Temple Assembly of God Church, 18700 State Route 4, Virden with the Rev. Terry Turner and Rev. Randol Mercer officiating.
Burial will follow in Girard Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Matt Nagel, Nicholas Nagel, Dennis Adams, David Adams, Russell Adams, Benjamin Ellis and Andrew James. Donations Information
