Condolences
November 08, 2020
I hope that "Aunt" Betty sees this. I just learned of "uncle" Freddie (that's what I called them) yesterday from my father, John Fanning (St. Louis). I am so saddened by his passing and have such fond childhood memories of him (and aunt Betty). He was always so kind to me when we visited. I remember the first time we visited. I so much wanted to take a baby pig home with me as a pet. I was really wanted that young pig. Living in south St Louis, that wasn't a possibility. Uncle Freddie comforted me and let me know how much the piglet needed it's mother and that it would be so much better if I didn't take it home with me. Again, he was so kind. Another trip allowed me to ride with him on a tractor, again something that a "city boy" would normally never do. He treated me like one of his sons. Next, I really wanted to work for him on the farm in my early teens. He (and my mom) convinced me that working on a farm was very challenging and perhaps not as fun as it seemed. Aunt Betty would cook such great meals and I truly loved the "farm" experience. I last saw him at a family funeral in Illinois back in the 80s. Soon after, I moved from St. Louis and have moved around the country as a musician and a music educator. I'm now in Bethlehem, PA, though I also call St. Louis, Grosse Pointe, MI and Sylva, NC, my home(s). I want his family to know that I am deeply sorry for their loss. My father is the same age. You are truly in my thoughts and prayers. - Rich Fanning
