Obituary of William R. "Bill" Gahr

William R. "Bill" Gahr, 79, of Chesterfield, IL, passed away Thursday morning, March 19, 2020 at Missouri Baptist Hospital. Bill was born on April 4, 1940 to Myron and Ruth (Ewin) Gahr in Chesterfield, IL. After high school he entered the Army, serving as an MP in Germany. On September 10, 1965 he married Kay Chism in Chesterfield, IL. Bill retired from the State of Illinois where he worked in the highway maintenance department. He was also a grain and livestock farmer in the Chesterfield area. Bill was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Chesterfield and loved his grandchildren and cattle farming. Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kay Gahr of Chesterfield, IL; daughter, Polly Gahr of Springfield, IL; son, Andrew (Gretchen) Gahr of Chesterfield, IL; 3 grandchildren; sister, Karolyn Frye of Chandler, AZ; brother, John (Susan) Gahr of Afton, TX, as well as several nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his parents; son, John Matthew Gahr; 2 sisters, Gwen Stayton and JoAnn Scarborough, and a brother, George Gahr. Private graveside services were held in Keller Cemetery, Chesterfield, IL, Monday, March 23, 2020, with John Gahr officiating. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
