Obituary of Hazel Barnes
Hazel Barnes, 82, of Girard, passed away Friday afternoon, October 18, 2019 at Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Virden, IL.
Hazel was born on January 16, 1937 to Cecil and Dolly (Russell) Roark in Monticello, KY. On May 30, 1954 she married Donald Barnes at the First Church of God in Girard, Illinois.
Hazel and her husband Don were the owners of Hazel's Dairy Creme and Barnes Maytag Laundromat, both in Girard, Illinois. They also owned and operated Barnes Variety Stores in Girard and Morrisonville, Illinois. Through the years, Hazel also worked at The Edge Inn, Bonnie B Cafe, Dairy Queen, State Bank of Girard, Marine Bank, and Cherry's IGA where she worked as the deli manager. Hazel was very active in her church, The First Church of God in Springfield. She was dedicated to her family, community, and friends. Hazel was on the Board of Directors at the Carlinville Area Hospital, was heavily involved in the development of the Miss Girard Pageant, and was named the Citizen of the Year in 1984 due to the contributions to the city and organizing benefits. Hazel was a mom and grandma to many and loved by all.
Hazel is survived by her husband Donald; daughter, Donna (Richard) Miller of Girard, IL; son, Brad (Patrick Darrow) Barnes of Jacksonville, IL; two granddaughters, Laura (Jason) Collins of Eureka, IL, and Jessica Wise of Springfield, IL; sister, June Emerson of Riverton, IL; brother, Eldon (Leah) Roark of Virden, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by parents, Cecil and Dolly Roark, and her great-granddaughter, Tabatha Collins.
Visitation will be held Monday, October 21, 2019, from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home, Girard, IL.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at 10:00 am at the Davis-Anderson Funeral Home, Girard, IL, with Rev's. Alvin Dial and Jay Kroft, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Girard Cemetery.
