Donald L. Harms
78, of Atwater, passed away Sunday morning, September 15, 2013 at his residence.
He was born on November 5, 1934 to George E. and Hazel T. (Leach) Harms at home in Atwater. Donald graduated from Carlinville High School with the class of 1952. He served his country in the Army Reserves. On June 10, 1956 he married Phyllis Steward at the Atwater Christian Church.
Don farmed his entire life while working first at Fiat-Allis in Springfield, retiring in 1981, and then was a rural mail carrier for the Waggoner Post Office, retiring after 10 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Carlinville and a member of American Legion Guy Baird Post 554. Don served on the board of Bethel Ridge Cemetery. He loved hunting and watching western movies. He was a very strong family man.
Donald is survived by his loving spouse of 57 years, Phyllis, 4 daughters - Bev Ruyle (husband Curt) of Girard, Barb McDaniels (husband Don) of Carlinville, Betty Scheldt (husband Jim) of Carlinville, Brenda Smith (husband Harold) of Carlinville; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother - Harold "Gene" Harms (wife Dorothy) of Carlinville; several niece and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son - Bradley E. Harms; brothers - Robert and Gerald; sister - Georgann Rudolph. Funeral Information
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 17, 2013, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Pastor Jacob Butcher from the First Christian Church in Girard will officiate.
Burial will take place in the Bethel Ridge Cemetery in Atwater. Donations Information
