Obituary of Roy Aloysius Aherin

Roy A. Aherin 85, of Farmersville passed away on Thursday October 7, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Home in Springfield. Roy was born May 8, 1925 on the family farm north-east of Farmersville, the son of Michael C. and Laura (Fitzgerald) Aherin. Preceding him in death besides his parents were three brothers, John, Allan, and Lawrence, and one sister, Mary Pacatte. Roy will be greatly missed by his wife of 61 years. He married the former Nelda Eyrse on November 27, 1948 at St. Thomas Aquanis Catholic Church in Mt. Pulaski, IL. Also surviving are their eight children: Robert (Sue) of Monticello, Linda (Tony) Chernausky of Westville, Carolyn (John) DeWerff of Nokomis, Mary Pat Brady of Bloomington, Dennis (Joyce) of Philipsburg, Kansas, Philip (Diane) of Dieterich, Diane (Marty) Green of Springfield, and Kevin (Marti) of Chatham. There are 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Roy is also survived by sister-in¬ law Irene Aherin of Springfield, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Aherin retired in January 1993 after 25 years as a coal miner with Freeman United Coal Company, working at Crown I in Farmersville, and many years at Crown II in Virden. Roy also, had retired from his other passion, farming, enjoying driving John Deere equipment and Chevy trucks. Roy was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Farmersville, was a member of Farmersville Knights of Columbus, and United Mine Workers of America. He was a past president of St. Isidore School board, and had served as a trustee of Bois D'Are Township. Roy enjoyed spending time with his family, especially playing with his grandchildren. Watching Cardinal baseball, and cheering for Illinois basketball. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of St. Joseph's Home for the excellent care they gave Roy the past two years. What a wonderful place with very caring staff. Funeral Information Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with prayer service at 3:45 P.M. at St Mary's Church in Farmersville on Sunday, October 10, 2010 and one hour prior to services. Funeral mass will be officiated by Father Jerry Bunse at St. Mary's on Monday October 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., with burial at St. Martin's Cemetery in Farmersville, IL. Donations Information In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Mary's Church in Farmersville, St. Joseph's Family Living Center in Springfield, or Alzheimer's Research of Springfield, IL.
