Obituary of Joan Harris Broom

Joan Harris Broom 81 of Carlinville, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 9, 2013 at Carlinville Area Hospital, Carlinville, IL. Joan was born on August 2, 1932 to Earl and Olive (Tate) Harris in Odin, IL. She married William M. Broom in August 1954 in Odin, IL and he preceded her in death on April 12, 2001. Joan graduated from Odin High School with the class of 1950. She later graduated from SIU Carbondale in 1954. As a young lady, Joan taught piano lessons and taught school in Southern Illinois.Joan served as a pianist and organist for the churches she was a member of. Joan was a homemaker, great cook, and in 1968 she and her husband Bill, became owner and operators of Broom's Orchard in Carlinville. In 1983 Joan planned the first Broom's Orchard Apple Festival, that continues annually to this day.She enjoyed golfing, hunting mushrooms and fishing, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Raymond, IL. Joan instilled a strong work ethic in her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her children and grandchildren whom she loved very much. Joan is survived by 2 daughters, Cynthia (Bill) Raines of Waco, TX and Stephanie (Tim) Nelson of Carlinville; son, Jeff (Lisa) Broom of Carlinville; 4 granddaughters, Jill Sheets, Anna Raines, Alison Broom and Megan Broom; 4 grandsons, Brad Raines, Ben Nelson, Brett Nelson and Jay Broom; 2 great grandchildren; 2 nieces and a nephew. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, William Broom; parents, Earl and Olive Harris and a sister, Nancy Robb. Funeral Information Visitation will be held on Monday, October 14, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 10:00 am at the funeral home with Rev. Dave Ziegenbein officiating. Entombment will take place in the Mausoleum of Valor located at Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery.
