Grace Marie (Kates) Monts, 84 of Carlinville, IL passed away Monday morning, March 23, 2026, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, IL.

Grace was born September 23, 1941, in Nokomis, IL, a daughter of Raymond L. Kates and Mildred Murkin Kates. She graduated from Shelbyville High School with the class of 1959 and then attended Sparks Business College in Shelbyville, IL. She married Robert J. Hazen on February 16, 1959, in Shelbyville, IL and they had three children together. They later divorced and Grace married Robert E. Monts on January 1, 1995.

Grace began her career as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell, then she and her husband owned and operated Bob & Gracie's Place in Shelbyville, IL for many years. Later in life, she worked for Accu-data, serving as Secretary/Treasurer and Manager until her retirement in 2004. Grace was a member of Ss. Mary & Joseph Catholic Church in Carlinville, IL. She enjoyed gardening, word puzzles, and was very talented at creating paintings for her family to enjoy.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, son, Robert "Wes" W. Hazen, and sister, Thelma Hill.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Ss Mary & Joseph Catholic Church, 2010 E. 1st South St., Carlinville, IL.

Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:00 am, Saturday, March 28, 2026 at Ss Mary & Joseph Catholic Church, with Rev. Joseph Koyekel, SAC officiating.

Burial will follow in New Calvary Cemetery, Carlinville.

Grace is survived by her husband, Robert E. Monts of Carlinville, IL, daughter, Uvanna J. (Bill) McKinney of Lakewood, IL, daughter, Robin R. (Alan) Black-Rubenstein of Godfrey, IL, daughter-in-law Misty Hazen of Red Oak, TX, sister, Norma Lape of Shelbyville, IL, grandchildren Michael (Angie) Owens, Elizabeth (Dustin) Ragan, Danielle (Shawn) Schroeder, Sarah (Lee) LoBue of Carlinville, IL, Danette (Daniel) Burke,and Taylor (Toni) Hazen, 12 Great Grandchildren, and 3 Great Great Grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Macoupin County Animal Shelter or Ss. Mary & Joseph Catholic Church.
