Joan L. “Joanie” Hampton, 85, of Virden, IL, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025, at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Joanie was born July 7, 1939, in Thayer, IL, a daughter of Joseph James and Wanita Ruth (Murphy) Centko. She attended Virden Schools and married Richard “Rich” Hampton on August 17, 1973, in Virden, IL.

Joanie was known for her quick wit, warm heart, and love of a good yap session. She cherished her granddaughters-Abygayle Hampton, Karleigh (Bryce) Hiler, and Clayre Hampton-and adored her great-granddaughters, Charlotte and Sofia Hiler. Whether enjoying a lunch date with a margarita, sewing, baking cakes, or relaxing with Days of Our Lives, Joanie found joy in life’s simple pleasures.

She also spent time writing commercials for WRVI Radio and was a former Cub Scout leader for Pack 55. Joanie loved volunteering at North Mac Schools, where she was affectionately known by many children as “Grandma Joanie.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hampton; her parents, Joseph and Wanita Ruth Centko; and her brother, Joseph Centko, Jr.

She is survived by her son, Eric Hampton (significant other Amanda) of Jacksonville, IL; her former daughter-in-law, Julie Hampton of Virden, IL, with whom she shared a close bond; her granddaughters and great-granddaughters; her siblings, Pamela (Doug) Waldeck of Farmersville, IL, Karen Dodsworth (Cliff Buscher) of Chatham, IL, and Bruce (Mary) Centko of Auburn, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Private Graveside Services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL. Burial will follow.

Memorials may be made to the Virden Fire Protection District or the North Mac Public School Foundation.
